Stuck on something? Below are answers to the most common questions. If your question isn't here, email me directly — I read every message.

How do I identify a record by photo?

Open the Identify tab → tap the camera icon → take a photo of the label or sleeve. For best results, fill the frame with the label, use good lighting, and avoid glare on the vinyl. The app reads the label text on-device, then searches the catalog for a match.

How does Crate mode work?

The Crate tab lets you walk through a record shop and call out records as you see them. Tap Start, then for each record speak the artist, title, label, and catalog number you can read on the sleeve. The app transcribes each utterance, matches it against the catalog, and totals the value at the end. Everything runs on-device.

Do I need a Discogs account?

No. The app works without any account. Connecting your Discogs account is optional and only matters if you make many live lookups — authenticated requests get 60 requests per minute instead of 25. You can connect via Settings → Connect with Discogs.

What's the difference between free and paid tier?
  • Free: Search the most-collected 50,000 albums, identify by photo / audio / voice, see eBay sold prices, run up to 3 Crate sessions, and view full pressing analysis on 5 records of your choice.
  • Paid: The full catalog (200,000 albums with every sibling pressing), unlimited Crate sessions, unlimited pressing deep-dives, counterfeit warnings, value-percentile rank, and original-pressing identification.
What are the "5 free deep dives"?

On the free tier, the Pressing tab shows the full premium analysis — matrix codes, pressing plant, sibling comparison, counterfeit warnings, value rank — for any 5 records you choose. Once you've opened a record's pressing deep-dive, it stays fully unlocked forever for that record. After 5 unique records, additional ones show only the pressing tier badge until you upgrade.

Why is my voice not being picked up in Crate mode?
  • Make sure microphone and speech recognition permissions are granted in iOS Settings → Privacy.
  • Speak clearly with a pause between records — the app commits an utterance after about 1.2 seconds of silence.
  • If you're in a noisy environment, get the phone closer to your mouth and speak slightly louder.
How do reissue / "buy" links work?

When a master has a modern audiophile reissue (MoFi, Analogue Productions, Speakers Corner, etc.), the Buy tab on that release shows the reissue with deep-links to vendors that stock it. Tapping a link opens the vendor's search page in Safari — we can't show live prices in-app but the vendor's page always shows current price and stock.

Does GrailVinyl take a cut of my purchases?

Some vendor links include an affiliate tag (Amazon Associates, Music Direct affiliate, Acoustic Sounds affiliate). If you buy through one, we may receive a small commission — at no extra cost to you. Vendor selection is based on which retailers carry each label, not on which pays the highest commission.

How can I get my money back?

In-app purchases are handled by Apple. Request a refund through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com — we can't issue refunds directly because Apple controls the transaction.
